WHO'S EXCITED FOR THE PRO BOWL???...

...Said literally nobody ever! The despair is real. To think we are down to our last football game of the season, and it's between the Seahawks and Patriots for petessakes?!?!?! I'd rather watch flag football coached by Steve Young and Jerry Rice. What's that? You say I can watch that very sport this Tuesday night on ESPN??? Hmmmm...I was wrong. Maybe CSI: Des Moines is on.

Here is some stuff I like and hope you like too...

AS ALWAYS, REPLY TO THIS EMAIL WITH YOUR THOUGHTS AND COMMENTS AND STUFF YOU WANT TO SEE! I FEEDBACK IS ALWAYS APPRECIATED!

NFL PRO BOWL WEEKEND

Greatest game never played...The Pro Bowl is where the best of the best of the League-- the warriors who have battled through 17 games like gladiators, fighting, bleeding, and breaking bones for your entertainment-- dork around for three-plus hours in a complete waste of digital time. The fact that this is broadcast instead of animated shows what a missed opportunity this is. Imagine the Pro Bowl with Johnny Quest and Grape Ape. Beats the heck out of whatever they are doing below... Sign me up for the Laff Olympics!

Let's get to the picks!

  • TUE | AFC @ NFC | PICK: EVERYONE LOSES

    • Not sure this is even worth the effort it takes to type with correct spelling. America loses when this game is played. This isn't the NBA. Or tennis. Games where you can just grab a few friends and head to the park. If I ever see an NFL lineman in a park, I know it's time to move. They are HUGE! The old backyard "run to the tree and turn around" is never gonna fly. They would hurt the tree! I don't care who wins they Pro Bowl, and neither do they. I love that they get honored for being the year's best. Just buy everyone a car like they used to and call it a day.

MY SPOTIFY PLAYLIST OF THE WEEK...

My Achy-Breaky Heart is in West Virginia With My Dog

Enough of you were drunk while reading last week's newsletter to actually go to Spotify and listen to the College Rock Playlist. I wanted to apologize to each of you personally, but then I thought--"Wait! I love way more bad songs than just those!" So for the next few weeks, I will continue to share the soundtrack that no one wanted...As with all things in my life, these songs are mid-tempo and impossible to dance to. That is the exact lane America prefers me in--a lane where old man dance moves are punished harshly.

Growing up in the Midwest, we had plenty of country songs to choose from. Much to my sisters' dismay, there is not a Garth Brooks or Tim McGraw tune on the list (although Indian Outlaw was very narrowly rejected--sorry, Bridget!). It is all folk and bluegrass and people who mercifully sound nothing like my musical archenemies, The Eagles!

  1. Baby, Now That I've Found You | Alison Krauss

  2. The Big Rock Candy Mountain | Harry McClintock

  3. Sidewalk Stars | Cindy Woolf

  4. Sweet Old World | Emmylou Harris

  5. Good As Gold | Sarah Shook & the Disarmers

  6. The Boxer | Jerry Douglas, Mumford & Sons, Paul Simon

  7. This Heart | Nancy Griffith, Bodeans

  8. Kansas City | The New Basement Tapes

  9. Sentimental | Howard Iceberg & the Titanics

  10. All Boats Rise | Kasey Rausch, Anne Sibley, Rich Burgess

Feel Free to listen and bale some hay along with me!

THE SHOW I AM WATCHING

About Time

I LOVE time travel movies, and when they are rom-coms--even better! About Time is one of the best of the breed--a classic British romance in the spirit of what I think is one of the best decades ever for British comedies, the 1990's. It feels like pre-villian, floppy-haired Hugh Grant is about to jump out at every turn, and I say that as a good thing. Writer/Director Richard Curtis has perfected the art of breaking hearts and then patching them back together. More than anyone, he excels at the bittersweet-- my favorite feeling and the one that makes life life.

Rachel McAdams has never been better, and Bill Nighy and Domhnall Gleeson will have you laughing, then crying, then laughing because you're crying.

COMEDIAN TO KNOW: MICK GLEDHILL

This one is long overdue! I have avoided it because of my general aversion to Australians 😀... I reject on principle any group of people who are always better looking, more fun and cooler than I will ever be. Meet Mick Gledhill! Mick may be the weirdest guy I know-- an Aussie with a long, proud history of serving his country, before he turned skydiving instructor, turned comedian, turned actor, turned some kind of weird underwear model...I don't ask!. In the name of Paul Hogan, that is a lot of stuff!!! On top of all of that, he is absolutely hilarious in his easy-going, insanely charming Australian way, and to make it all worse-- he is one helluva great guy and, as a cancer survivor--a true role model for how to live life with grace under pressure! He has toured America a couple of different times since I started doing comedy, and I was lucky enough to do a couple of shows with him. I have my fingers crossed he comes back for a third go-around and he will tolerate me long enough to put together a fun show. Check him out HERE (love this joke!).

BTW... He walks by his own ad every day and takes a pic for Instagram just in case anyone didn't know he was modeling underwear out there in the world... most Aussie thing ever! 🙂

CLIP OF THE WEEK

Meh...this one is cute. I wrote this one a long time ago and then forgot about it, but I have been working on a joke lately about how sad it would be to be Benjamin Button in middle age when no one knew which direction he was going... Kind of negates his whole superpower of aging backwards! This is not that joke, but it shows you how disturbingly fascinated I am with BB!
