D.C. Students Lead the Way in STEM Exploration and Discovery
Throughout the 2024–25 academic year, students at Whittier Elementary School in Washington, D.C. have been deeply engaged in researching and developing STEM-based solutions to real-world sustainability challenges.
Made possible through a partnership between C-STEM and Dow, the program centered around a powerful and timely theme: "Resiliency—Addressing the Heat Island Effect and Water Management."
Students explored this theme through hands-on, project-based learning that integrated science, technology, engineering, art, and communication. The culmination of their work was a dynamic and visually impressive showcase, featuring a mosaic mural, sea turtle sculpture, photography exhibition, innovation prototypes, and a synthesis project that unified all elements into a cohesive and creative presentation of solutions.
This partnership highlights the impact of STEM education when students are empowered to apply their learning to meaningful, community-connected challenges.
