Well hello there, my overworked, under-rested, emotionally accessorized Hussy.
It was a comedy-heavy week.
Lots of laughs.
So much fun.
But one experience over the long weekend could’ve sucked the joy out of all of it.
I went out to support a friend who’s been opening on the road for a “headliner.”
I’m putting headliner in quotes.
Because here’s the question:
Are people paying to see you?
Or are people paying to see a comedy show at a comedy club?
Those aren’t necessarily the same thing.
Sometimes “headliner” means you’ve built an audience.
Sometimes it means you’ve been around long enough, have enough credits, and a club can put your picture on a poster.
This was more the latter.
I’m not going to use his name.
Voldemort.
I generally don’t critique other comedians unless we’re friends and they ask me to.
If we’re not close and you ask, I’ll focus on what you did well.
Or tell you I didn’t hear your set.
Which, as you’ll soon discover, is probably true.
Earbuds and all.
I recently heard a comedian say the worst thing you can call another comedian is a hack.
Hack means generic.
The premises aren’t original.
The material could’ve been performed by anybody.
I’ve been doing stand-up for almost ten years.
I’ve seen plenty of it.
I’ve probably written some myself.
