A Note From Sarah

Something new is happening, and I'm launching a podcast.

It's called Meeting at the Crossroads and it's an extension of everything this newsletter is about. Short, honest conversations with business owners and directors who have stood at one of those pivotal moments. The kind where you know a decision has to be made, but the right one isn't yet clear. Should I grow, merge, sell, step away, retire or reinvent my role? or Start again?

Each episode will be around 15 - 30 minutes. No fluff, no performance. Just real people sharing what brought them to that moment, what it actually felt like, and what they did next.

I believe these stories are some of the most valuable things we can share with each other. And I want to make sure no business owner has to face those moments alone.

That's where you come in.

If someone comes to mind, a business owner or director who has navigated a real crossroads moment and would be willing to share it, I'd love an introduction. It doesn't need to be a polished story or a success. The most powerful episodes will be the honest ones.

Just email me at sarah@sarahdaly.com with the subject line Guest for Meeting at the Crossroads, tell me a little about them, and I'll take it from there.

Thank you, as always, for being here. This community is growing into something I'm genuinely proud of and I can't wait for you to hear what's coming.

The One Diagnostic Every Business Owner Needs

There is one question every business owner should be able to answer before even thinking about an exit, merger, or succession. It is called the bus question:

Could this business run without me if I got hit by a bus tomorrow morning?

For many owners, the honest answer is NO. And there is no shame in that but there is a cost. A business that cannot function without its owner is not yet ready to be sold, merged, or handed on. It is also vulnerable in ways most owners prefer not to think about.

The first step is to understand how it happened. A simple time-logging exercise, tracking hours across home life, fitness, and work, and noting what questions are coming to you, from whom, and why, which often reveals the patterns within weeks. From there, the priorities become clear: roles and responsibilities, communication, training gaps, and the processes that only live in your head.

The good news is that small changes compound. Addressing these gaps improves the business today and puts you in a far stronger position when the crossroads eventually arrives. The bus question is worth revisiting at least once a year.

Question

Question For Reflection

These questions won't all apply to you right now. Some will land immediately. Others will circle back later, at a different moment, with a different weight. The ones that make you uncomfortable are usually the ones worth returning to.

Who are you without this business?

Not what you'll do, who you'll be. Your title, your routine, your sense of purpose have all been built around this. It's worth asking honestly what's underneath it before the question answers itself.
