The View from Here

Once upon a time, in a land far away there lived a man and his wife whose mission in life was to help young people to understand the Good News about the Great Gift that was available to them if they chose to receive it. The gift was salvation in Jesus – freely available, eternal life, no catches.

The couple knew that if they could just get the attention of the young people for long enough, they could explain the gift and help kids to receive it for themselves.

Twice a year, the couple would run a weeklong camp. 120 kids, 30 leaders, 14 tents and a vacant field on a farmers land and the stage was set.

It wasn’t easy. Just the thought of running the camps made the man’s back ache, along with a spike in his anxiety levels. Why? Because there was so much work involved in preparing for them – promotional slide shows, flyers, visits to schools to promote, teams to recruit, budgets to prepare. The work was endless.

And then there were the tents – World War 2 vintage army tents. Unwieldy, moldy, canvas, heavy wooden poles, large old wooden pegs and more. They were heavy and the man was slight in his build. Lifting those tents for delivery to the farm was back breaking. But without the tents there would be no camp.

Raising the tents was a 2-3 person job. First the canvas had to be unrolled, then the middle pole and four corner poles found and positioned. Then the canvas must be lifted, followed by a hasty hammering of wooden tent pegs and connecting guy ropes. Repeat the process 14 times.

Once completed, the stage was set for a week of fun, fellowship and considering the Good News which the man and his wife had labored so hard to make possible.

Much fun was had at those camps. Memories were made which still live on. At each camp, some of the children decided they wanted to receive the Great Gift which Jesus had lived and died for – their eternal life.

What’s the point of this story?

Eventually the man and his wife smartened up. They realized they didn’t need to do all that work themselves. They worked harder at recruiting a team, involved others more and the workload became more manageable. Children still attended camps twice a year and at each camp some received the Great Gift Jesus had prepared for them.

That was Then. What about Here and Now?

Today, the young people of Durham Region, right here in your own backyard, also need to hear about the Great Gift.

Who will set up the tents? Who will set the stage to create the opportunity for the Great Gift to be made known?

Will YOU step up? Will YOU be part of the team to get the job done?

As a team, here’s how we can get it done. Together

Durham Region Schools

Mission Field in our own Backyard

Children, in the Public and Catholic systems, right here in our Region, need to hear about the Good News of Jesus. Today. They need to be given the opportunity and time to consider what Jesus has done for them and to consider His claim on their lives.

200,000 Students

Thousands of Staff

This is the mission field God has planted YOU in. This B2B update outlines what YOU can do to be fruitful and effective in the mission field God has placed YOU in.

You can’t do everything, but we can all do something. We can raise those tents together and then run a fruitful and effective outreach endeavor.

Read on as we describe what is involved in raising modern day tents in today's modern mission field in Durham Region.

Plan, Prioritize, Prepare and Pray

Plan - where YOU can be involved. What talents and aptitudes can you offer?

Prioritize – make space in your life. Your children and grandchildren are a priority.

Prepare – choose where and how to be involved and what your role will be.

Pray – Clear the field and break up the ground. Pray personally and join with other churches in a quarterly B2B CUPS (Churches United in Prayer for our Schools) prayer meeting

Prepare the PEGS

Start a Parent Engagement Group (PEG) in your Church

Understand A PEG is a group of parents, and grandparents in a church. They make it their business, working with other neighboring church PEGS to engage effectively with the schools they have natural connection to.

Recognize that PEGS are an invaluable part of the structure

  • Without PEGS the tent cannot stand

  • There must be enough of them for the tent to stand strong. Every church needs one.

  • They need to be connected to the tent – engaged in the schools in a meaningful way.

Initiate - Ask your Church Leadership if they can approve a PEG to:

  • Engage fruitfully with the schools their children attend.

  • Get things done - PEGS have the blessing of Church Leadership to get things done, recruit volunteers, and pray together, all as a ministry of the church.

Stand for Parent Council:

  • Encourage other parents to support your bid.

  • Never go alone. Encourage other parents to stand as well. You’ll need the support.

  • Exercise a key role in the oversight of your kids at their school.

Join a Cluster  Community

Connect with other Christian parents from your school
Plan, pray and strategize for a group of schools in your area.

Understand

  • A Cluster community equates to the network of guy ropes which connect the PEGS to the overall canvas of the tent. It is the network which establishes, supports and achieves the mission.

  • A Cluster provides fellowship and a sense of team in a geographic area.

  • A Cluster consists of:

    • One High School

    • 6-8 Feeder Elementary Schools

    • Churches, Parents, Volunteers

    • Christian Teachers Fellowship

    • Christian Clubs in every High and Elementary school

Recognize the role of the Cluster Community:

  • Connect with other parents and families in your school(s)

  • To support, encourage and engage effectively to share the Good News of Jesus.

Enjoy the benefits  of joining a cluster community:

  • Fellowship with other believers in your Cluster Community

  • Effective action

  • Fruit
