The Reason for the Season
Tis the season to be jolly – Fa la la la la la la la la. At least that’s the way Christmas comes across these days. What is missing in this cheerful outlook is the reason why the season calls us to be so jolly.
The Reason is the One, namely Jesus, who’s coming to earth as a helpless infant has been celebrated during this season for over 2000 years.
Who is Jesus and what is it that makes Him the reason for such celebration? In the Bible, Jesus is known by a variety of titles such as Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. These titles describe various aspects of His character. If these claims are true, then surely, He is the Reason for the Season.
However, Jesus did not come just to portray aspects of His character. He also came to model to us how we should live. His life was a living, walking, talking example of how we are called to act in a way that pleases God. Through His own example, Jesus was able to convey how we are to shape our own lives. He taught us to :
· Be Salt Seasoners – A common use of salt in Jesus’s time, as it is now, is to prevent rot. A modest amount of salt seasoning can stop rot and decay in its tracks. Jesus calls us to actively apply salt seasoning to our own communities with right living and Godly wisdom.
· Be Lamp Lighters - Jesus also calls us to be like Light, shining goodness, healthy thinking and wisdom into the dark places in our communities. When a light is turned on in a room, darkness is eliminated. Jesus calls us to bring light into the dark nooks and crannies of our society.
· Be Defeaters of Death and Decay – Jesus brings hope into a dying world. Through His death on the cross and subsequent resurrection, He reveals that death and decay need no longer instill fear and dread in our hearts. There is Eternal Life and Hope for those who choose to follow Jesus. When we share this Good News with others, who are as lost as we are, we too, like Jesus, become defeaters of death and decay.
Jesus truly is the Reason we celebrate during this Season of Joy and Hope. In this month’s bulletin we view our stories through the lens of Salt and Light versus Death and Decay. We are called to emulate the former and do battle against the latter.
May God bless you richly this Christmas as we celebrate the Reason for the Season.
