Your baseline was just the start: here's what comes next

Two years in, and the organisations that completed their NetShift baseline are starting to show what's possible. This edition, we're sharing their stories, unpacking what 'green energy' actually means in practice, and - if you had a baseline year with us - we're letting you know about a limited opportunity to continue your reporting journey with us.

What's been happening - and what's coming next

If you completed a baseline year with us and haven't yet followed up with a further year of reporting - now's the time. We have a limited number of places available for previous participants to catch up on next steps, whether that's supporting your own tracker, or for a certification (like Bcorps), or reporting to funders or investors, or to drive more footfall from customers.

Since 2023, NetShift has supported 150 small-medium businesses and community organisations across Devon to measure and reduce their carbon footprint. Many have used their reports to strengthen funding bids, satisfy stakeholders, and track real progress.

Real-world impact for Devon's Small Businesses & Not For Profits

Hear from two businesses in our recent support round who have started their NetShift journey...

Sirona Therapeutic Horsemanship - Dartington

Sirona provides equine-based therapeutic activities for disadvantaged young people and adults near Totnes. They joined NetShift in October 2025 to get a clearer, more measurable picture of their environmental impact.

The process surfaced useful detail - staff commuting distances, participant travel, and long-term opportunities like vegetation roofing and additional tree planting. It also confirmed that much of what Sirona was already doing was on the right track. Administrator Diane Cleave said the report helped them "have a tangible measure of our impact" and that demonstrating carbon credentials now matters to their stakeholders: "Having a carbon neutral credential demonstrates to our stakeholders that we are committed to health and wellbeing of all - and that starts with the environment."

Moor Imagination Collective - Buckfastleigh

James Lucas and his colleagues at Moor Imagination had sustainability built into their project from day one - redeveloping a Grade II listed Methodist Church into a community hub with a café, event space, and town archive.

When they spotted the NetShift offer through the Libraries Unlimited & BIPC, they signed up to check they hadn't missed anything. The consultant's report drilled into heating options for a heritage building where solar panels aren't permitted - a practical challenge that needed specialist input. "I would recommend it to any other businesses, however far they are through their plans," said James. "The NetShift consultant will either help them get started or, as they did with us, confirm we're doing all we can to reach these important goals."

Why bother continue with carbon reduction? What's the point?

You've done the baseline. You know your hot spots. The question now is what you do with it. Plus funders, customers, investors, and employees are demanding more than pledges. They want action plans and policies detailing your path to net zero. A NetShift carbon audit gives you a defensible baseline and a roadmap that connects impact with resilience, reputation, and revenue. And now it's time to measure year 2 and 3 and re-align on the goals.

Designed for small and medium businesses that are values-led, not just box-ticking. Why revisit the action plan?

I Want To Update My Action Plan

Chagford Inn sign, a sustainable pub with en-suite accommodation

NetShift is helping organisations move from a carbon snapshot - to a story of genuine, measurable progress.

Yesterday we revisited the award-winning Fig & Smoke catering company who run the Chagford Inn, who were the winners of Devon Food & Drink's Best Pub 2025. Since we helped them understand their carbon footprint in 2024, they've implemented a number of changes to their operation, including installing a voltage optimiser, which redirects up to 20% of energy before it comes into the pub and lowers electricity bills by 10-19%. This was match funded 50% by West Devon Council thanks to their involvement in our programme. If you want to get inspired see their Sustainability page on their website.

Green Energy - what's truly renewable? And which provider is really green?

Which energy providers are truly 'green' when they say they are green?

Your tariff says '100% renewable' - but is it? We explain the difference between green energy that's certified on paper and energy that's genuinely changing the grid.
