News from The Hills Women's Shed

The Hills Women's Shed is continuing to thrive as a welcoming space where local women connect, share experiences, and support each another.

With both Tuesday and Thursday sessions now running, we've welcomed an incredible 260 attendees over the past two months. The growing participation highlights just how important safe and supportive community spaces are for women.

A huge community thank you goes to our much-loved coordinator, Queenie Tran, who has recently stepped away from the program to begin her next chapter. We thank Queenie for her dedication and the positive impact she has made on so many lives. Stay tuned for more details on our new shed coordinator.

Young Healthy Minds Forum

More than 130 students and teachers recently came together at The Hills Grammar School for our Young Healthy Minds Forum, a day dedicated to empowering young people with the knowledge, skills and confidence to support their mental wellbeing.

Students from schools across Western Sydney explored topics including understanding mental health, recognising when to seek help, building healthy coping strategies and supporting their peers. A highlight of the day was hearing from special guest speaker Matt Caruana, who shared his powerful personal journey through mental health challenges and inspired students with the message, "Hope is hopeless without action."

Open conversations and interactive sessions, gave students practical tools, fresh insights and greater confidence to care for both themselves and those around them.

Clean Up Australia Day

Our Chair, Mario Rodrigues, recently teamed up with Castle Hill Rotary Club for The Hills Shire Council's clean-up at Ted Harwood Reserve as part of the Clean Up Australia Day initiative.

Together, volunteers collected 18 bags of rubbish, including car tyres, aerosol cans, wrappers, and fast-food waste. In just two hours, the team made a remarkable difference.

Meet Alfie and Anne - One Of Our Star Pooches

This month we'd like to introduce volunteer Anne Findlay and her beautiful Border Collie, Alfie.

Alfie is not only gentle and affectionate, but also incredibly intuitive, often sensing when someone needs a little extra comfort. His calm nature and friendly personality make him a favourite among residents, who eagerly await his visits and the gentleness he brings with him.

"We all have a lot of fun," says Anne. "It is great to see the excitement of residents during our visits. Alfie loves the attention and we enjoy the residents' stories."

One visit in particular remains unforgettable.

"As Alfie stopped beside one lady for a pat, her eyes lit up and she started chatting away to him. The staff got really excited, and one staff member even begun to cry... this was the first time they had ever heard that resident speak. What a privilege to witness something like that."

Moments like these highlight the powerful connection Alfie creates, showing how even a simple interaction can spark joy, memories, and communication in ways that words alone sometimes can't.

Thank you, Anne and Alfie, for the joy and connection you continue to bring to our community.

June Wellbeing Tip

Today take a few moments to write down three things you're grateful for. Gratitude helps shift our focus towards the positives and can improve overall wellbeing, resilience, and outlook over time.

Sometimes it's the smallest moments, such as a kind conversation, a shared laugh, or simply a beautiful sunrise, that can make the biggest difference.
