You see, unless you’re extraordinarily highly evolved, unexpected change and shocking news automatically triggers your old (lower) brain into dominance, catapulting your entire nervous system into fight or flight mode. That means stress hormones coursing through your body create a feeling of anxiety, and peace flies out the window. But just a few minutes of slow breathing physiologically resets your "old" brain.
Deep slow breathing - preferably in through the nose and out through the mouth - soothes the reactive old/lower brain and restores the higher/new brain to domination.
Operating from the old brain means anxiety, while operating from the new brain means feeling good, empowered, connected, creative, and Unafraid. Your peace is found in your new brain. Best of all, since breathing's always available, you always have the power to soothe yourself - no matter what's in the news. I've asked George to remind me of this when I forget - since the old brain can sure hijack us away from remembering, sometimes!
