2026 Flooring Sustainability Summit

Last month, I had the privilege of participating in the 3rd annual Flooring Sustainability Summit held at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington D.C. This was my second year moderating the Summit’s architects’ panel discussion, and my third year attending the program and representing IMI on the advisory committee, which helped to shape the Summit in the months leading up to it.
Why is IMI so invested in this event? Because it brings together leaders from across the flooring industry—manufacturers, architects and designers, contractors, trade associations, sustainability experts, and other stakeholders to advance sustainability, circularity, material transparency, responsible sourcing, and social responsibility across the flooring supply chain. Its goal is to share knowledge and encourage industry-wide collaboration toward healthier, lower-impact, more equitable flooring solutions.
While most events IMI participates in generally focus on materials installed by BAC contractors and craftworkers, e.g. tile, marble, and terrazzo, the Flooring Sustainability Summit broadens the conversation to include the entire flooring industry. Stepping outside our usual lane provides a fresh perspective on sustainability, circularity, material transparency, and the shared challenges and opportunities facing everyone involved in designing and constructing better buildings. In the end, the durable materials installed by BAC members and contractors come out ahead on most sustainability scorecards because they’re installed once and provide a lifetime of service.
This article will recap some of the major themes discussed at this year’s Flooring Sustainability Summit.
Sustainability is moving from aspiration to implementation.
Perhaps the strongest theme was that the flooring industry no longer needs to spend most of its energy establishing why sustainability matters. The discussion has moved toward how to actually deliver it: through specifications, manufacturing decisions, procurement, installation, end-of-life planning, and measurable performance. The Summit itself described its purpose as driving "collaboration, progress, and practical solutions."
Circularity is becoming central to the flooring sustainability conversation.
Recycling is only one piece. Durability, longevity, reuse, recoverability, recycled content, design for disassembly, and ultimately keeping materials in productive use longer are increasingly being considered together. Manufacturers across ceramic tile, stone, terrazzo, carpet, laminate, vinyl, wood, and other categories were specifically asked to address circular design alongside embodied carbon and environmental performance.
Durability and service life belong in the sustainability equation.
One important implication of the cross-category discussion is that environmental performance cannot be evaluated solely by an initial carbon number. How long a floor lasts, how much maintenance it requires, whether it must be replaced, and what happens to it afterward all matter. That makes lifecycle thinking particularly important when comparing fundamentally different flooring materials.
Better environmental data is essential but more data isn't necessarily the answer.
EPDs, LCAs, material-health information, certifications and product databases are becoming indispensable, yet architects and specifiers face an increasingly complicated information landscape. The Summit devoted an entire panel to demystifying LCAs, EPDs, databases, software and transparency tools, reflecting a larger need to make sustainability information usable for actual product decisions, rather than simply generating more documentation.
Architects want sustainability information they can actually use.
The architectural panel reinforced this from the demand side: architects are navigating sustainability criteria alongside aesthetics, cost, performance, availability, code requirements and client expectations. Product manufacturers therefore need to understand not simply which environmental attributes are favorable, but which information influences a specification and how architects access and evaluate it.
Sustainability cannot be reduced to embodied carbon alone.
The Summit's program deliberately broadened the conversation to include material health, circularity, transparency, human health, social considerations and equity in addition to carbon. That points toward a more multi-attribute definition of sustainable flooring, rather than allowing one metric to become a proxy for sustainability as a whole.
Different flooring materials have different sustainability strengths and there isn't one universal solution.
One of the more valuable aspects of the Summit is that competing material sectors participate together: carpet, ceramic tile, laminate, natural stone, terrazzo, resilient flooring and wood. Each category faces different raw material, manufacturing, transportation, installation, durability and end-of-life realities. The productive question therefore becomes less "Which flooring is sustainable?" and more "Which material provides the best lifecycle solution for this particular application?"
The supply chain may be the biggest opportunity and obstacle.
Sustainability goals established by manufacturers or architects don't automatically survive procurement and construction. The Summit deliberately brought manufacturers, distributors, retailers, general contractors, flooring contractors and installers into the same conversation to identify communication gaps and determine how sustainable design intent gets translated into actual project delivery.
Collaboration across traditional industry silos is becoming a sustainability strategy in itself.
The Summit is unusual because seven competing flooring-sector associations jointly host it. That structure reinforces one of its central messages: manufacturers, associations, architects, contractors, distributors, installers, sustainability organizations and policymakers cannot independently solve issues such as circularity, material transparency or end-of-life recovery. Bill Griese of Tile Council of North America (TCNA) characterized conversation among these groups as central to the Summit's purpose.
Standards, rating systems and sustainability frameworks are beginning to converge around a more common language.
Architects and manufacturers are dealing with LEED, WELL, Living Building Challenge, EPDs, LCAs, material-health programs, embodied-carbon metrics and other systems. The continuing challenge is interoperability and clarity—giving manufacturers, designers and owners a common vocabulary for evaluating materials instead of forcing everyone to navigate disconnected sustainability programs. The Summit's Pre-Summit Primer specifically addressed these standards and initiatives.
Sustainable products still have to be good products.
A recurring thread running through the manufacturer's program was performance: sustainability cannot be separated from durability, constructability and successful installation. A flooring product that earns environmental credentials but fails prematurely, is incorrectly installed, or requires early replacement undermines much of the intended environmental benefit. This is where installers and contractors become part of the sustainability discussion rather than simply the final step in the supply chain.
Sustainability must include social responsibility, human rights, and fair labor not just environmental performance.
The Grace Farms/Design for Freedom session broadened the definition of sustainable materials by focusing attention on the people behind the products. Responsible material selection requires greater transparency across global supply chains, including where raw materials come from, who extracts and manufactures them, and whether workers are protected from forced labor, child labor, unsafe working conditions, discrimination, and other forms of exploitation. The Summit's sustainability framework identified human rights, fair labor practices, safe working conditions, sufficient wages, ethical sourcing, and fair operating practices as components of sustainable procurement.
The 2026 Summit was explicitly conceived as a progression from earlier conversations toward action. The 2025 Summit concluded that circularity, meaningful data transparency and cross-sector collaboration were major priorities; organizers described 2026 as an opportunity to turn those takeaways into action.
Conclusion
The flooring industry's sustainability challenge is no longer simply to make greener products. It is to build a connected system in which manufacturers provide credible and understandable information; architects make informed, lifecycle-based selections; distributors and contractors preserve sustainable intent through procurement and construction; installers deliver durable assemblies; and the entire value chain collaborates on what happens to those materials at the end of their first useful life.
On the heels of another successful Flooring Sustainability Summit, the program’s advisory committee has already begun to debrief this year’s program and to plan for the 2027 Summit.
