Storm Amy Hits Ireland

A powerful storm, Storm Amy, struck Ireland in early October, bringing severe winds, flooding, and widespread disruption. One person died in what authorities have described as a weather-related incident in County Donegal.

Across the country, over 184,000 homes and businesses lost power, while many flights were cancelled and travel severely disrupted.

In response to the storm, Met Éireann issued a Status Red warning for Donegal and Status Orange / Yellow warnings for other counties.

As the clean-up continues, first responders, local authorities, and utility crews are working around the clock to restore services and assist affected communities.

New Emergency Communications System Launched to Support Rural Safety

The Irish Government has unveiled a new Mission Critical Communications platform aimed at improving emergency response connectivity in rural and remote areas.

The system is designed to act as a “last-resort” communications tool for first responders during power outages, network failures, or natural disasters. Officials say it will help ensure firefighters, Gardaí, paramedics, and rescue crews can continue to coordinate effectively in high-risk scenarios.

Government ministers welcomed the development, describing it as a vital investment in resilience and rural safety. The platform is expected to be rolled out nationally over the coming months.

Irish Red Cross Applauds UN Declaration on Protection of Humanitarian Workers

Dublin, 30 September 2025 – The Irish Red Cross has welcomed the United Nations’ recent Declaration on the Protection of Humanitarian Personnel, a significant international commitment aimed at safeguarding aid workers worldwide.

Launched on 21 September 2025 in New York, the Declaration has been signed by over 100 countries, including Ireland. This initiative underscores the urgent need to protect humanitarian personnel who risk their lives to provide essential aid in conflict zones and disaster-stricken areas.

The Irish Red Cross highlights that despite clear provisions under International Humanitarian Law (IHL), attacks on aid workers have become alarmingly frequent. The year 2024 marked the deadliest on record for humanitarian personnel, with 2025 projected to surpass it. Aid workers have been targeted in regions such as Gaza, Ukraine, Ethiopia, and Sudan, facing both physical violence and harmful information campaigns that undermine their critical work.

The Declaration focuses on four key areas to enhance the safety and effectiveness of humanitarian operations:

  1. Adherence – Promoting respect for and adherence to IHL, ensuring that humanitarian workers are protected under international law.

  2. Access – Facilitating humanitarian access to civilians in need, advocating for safe passage of aid in conflict zones.

  3. Alignment – Coordinating efforts among states, non-state actors, and humanitarian organizations to strengthen protection for personnel and ensure adequate funding for operations.

  4. Accountability – Ensuring that all incidents involving humanitarian personnel are investigated, with accountability measures taken in a victim-centered manner.

The Irish Red Cross emphasizes that protecting humanitarian workers is essential to safeguarding civilians. The organization calls for the political commitment reflected in the Declaration to be translated into tangible actions that uphold the safety and dignity of those delivering aid.
