Tax Free Retirement Accounts

We have all heard the tax saving acronyms, TFSA, RRSP, FTHBP, FHSA, RESP and more.  But have you heard the term TFRA, Tax Free Retirement Account.  As a tax professional we believe this is the number one tax saving strategy in Canada aside from being a business owner.  If you are incorporated the TFRA can be leveraged even further.

In simple terms the TFRA is a personal or corporate owned permanent life insurance policy.  These accounts grow tax free and shelter retained earnings from tax within a corporation.  Inside a corporation these accounts are paid for with pre-tax dollars and in some cases can be structured to make some or all of the premiums tax deductible as well.

Once of the biggest misconceptions with life insurance is that there is no value in the account until you die.  This is not the case.  You can borrow against the cash value while you are till alive, pass the in force policy ownership to a family member or business.  You can even will the death benefit to charity if you have no one to leave the benefit to.

“Do you want your widow to dress as nice as your spouse?”, is a question we ask couples.  The answer of course is yes.  This is one of the benefits to the tax saving strategy as the beneficiary will receive all of the funds tax free, bypassing probate.  You don’t want to the government to get your money do you?  Neither do we.  That is why you should setup a no obligation call today to see if you qualify for the TFRA.
