A Nonjudgemental Reading Buddy

For some children, reading aloud can be intimidating. But at libraries and schools throughout Southern California, therapy dogs are helping change that, one book at a time.

Through BARK Therapy Dogs, children read aloud to certified therapy dogs who never judge, correct, or make them feel self-conscious. At the Northridge Library, about 20 children gather each month to read with four furry listeners, building both reading skills and confidence.

BARK founder Josie Gaviers discovered the power of the approach nearly 20 years ago. She told struggling readers they were “junior trainers” who were helping train the dogs, transforming the experience from “I’m stupid” to “I get to help train the dog.”

Sometimes, the best way to help a child find their voice is to give them a quiet, patient listener with four paws.

"The kids really enjoy getting to read through all of the dogs … I think they enjoyed having each other and not being the only one."

CEO REFLECTIONS

As summer winds down, many of you are thinking about Back to School. Even if you don’t have kids, BTS marks an end to the hot weather, and before we know it, the colors in our world will begin shifting from greens to golds.

Who taught you to read?

Was it a parent or sibling who read to you? Or maybe it wasn’t until you entered first grade, like so many of us in my generation. Did you read so well that you skipped two grades, like my mother-in-law, author Suzanne Newton? Or perhaps you were a little later to reading than your classmates and needed some “extra help.”

For many children, that person is a teacher, librarian, parent, sibling, or caring adult who takes the time to make sure they have the tools they need to learn and succeed.

Now is the time to create a virtual Back-to-School drive on Benevolist.org and help a local nonprofit or your child’s school and teacher to provide the supplies they need to start the school year ready to teach and learn.

Together we can help create a few more reading origin stories!
