From Headmaster SnyderWhat are schools for? Surprisingly, people may disagree. Are they to train people so that they can participate in the economy? Are they to form citizens, citizens of the world, of the republic, of the state? Are students as future citizens the basis of hope in a nation, the material of a competitive economy? Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations turned some heads with his book that has a question for a title. What is the wealth of nations? Smith offered an answer with a lot of statistical reasoning: the wealth of nations is the productive work of its people. Ever since, we have measured our cultural health in terms like productivity, gross domestic product, job growth and salary growth. This is a dimension that is real, but, like bread alone, is it what man lives by? Of course, the answer is a bit cute. While man does not live by bread alone, he does obviously live by bread. A productive economy is better to have than to lack. Citizens are certainly necessary in a republic, which, though beleaguered as it is, still requires people raised into altruistic virtue in order to survive at all. If we value our republic, we need to educate our people. This means more than reading books or doing math. It means that young people need to be educated with other young people, their neighbors. Living with our neighbors is an art. Is there such a thing as children representing the hope of the future? For a nation, there is hope so far as a nation itself has hopes, but there is more to this. People who believe, the faithful, have reason to hope because they have a future. This means that the people to come are also their neighbors, and strangely so are the people of the past. It is our obligation to those who came before and those who will follow to continue the education and conversation of man with man and God that begins in the Garden of Eden. It is not good that man be alone. Let’s support our schools!
