For most of us, another year of Open competition in in the books. This year, CrossFit Fury had 148 athletes officially register for the Open!! That ranked Fury 17th out of over 3600 gym just in the United States and 73rd out of over 8800 gyms worldwide đŸ˜łđŸ€©đŸ€Ż

We also had 36 athletes qualify to move on to the online Quarterfinals competition the last week of March. Twenty athletes officially took on the challenge with the gym as a whole even participating in several of the workouts as part of our normal programming.

Preliminary Quarterfinal rankings are listed above. Athletes competing in the Individual qualifier ranking in the top 2,000 qualify for the Semifinals. Athletes competing in the Age-Group qualifier advance to Semifinals if they rank in the top 300 (ages 14-15, 16-17, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70+) or top 400 (ages 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54). This means Fury has at least 10 competitors that qualify to participate in Semifinal competitions!! đŸ’ȘđŸ»

SUPPLEMENT SPOTLIGHT

A recent randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial demonstrates that daily oral supplementation of nicotinamide (NAM) and pyridoxine (PN) significantly enhances muscle stem cell (MuSC) activity and accelerates structural repair following acute muscle injury in humans. Maintaining skeletal muscle integrity is a primary determinant of healthspan, yet endogenous regenerative capacity is frequently outpaced by age-related wasting. Currently, no targeted clinical therapeutics exist to directly upregulate the MuSC-mediated repair sequence.

In this trial, healthy young men were subjected to a highly damaging neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) protocol combined with eccentric contractions to induce localized myofiber necrosis. Participants were supplemented daily with 714 mg of NAM and 19 mg of PN, or a placebo, for nine days. The intervention was well-tolerated and elevated systemic concentrations of NAM, PN, and pyridoxal 5’-phosphate (PLP, the bioactive form of PN).

Histological analysis of muscle biopsies acquired eight days post-injury revealed a robust regenerative advantage in the supplemented cohort. NAM/PN treatment significantly increased the density of activated Pax7+ cells by 29%, MyoD+ proliferating progenitors by 67%, and terminally differentiating myogenin+ cells by 34%, relative to placebo. Consequently, the proportion of regenerating myofibers expressing embryonic myosin heavy chain (eMyHC) was elevated by 37%.

These findings provide compelling in vivo human evidence that the synergistic application of specific B-vitamins can bypass standard metabolic rate-limiters to force-multiply the myogenic program. This intervention presents a highly actionable, low-risk nutritional strategy for accelerating skeletal muscle repair and potentially mitigating pathological muscle wasting.
