SUPPLEMENT SPOTLIGHT

Stress relief, insomnia treatment, anxiety reduction — you may have heard of the herb ashwagandha and its potential health benefits, but what exactly is it, and what can it do for your body?

Popular in Ayurvedic medicine, a traditional system of medicine from India that provides a holistic approach to health, ashwagandha root is growing in popularity in wellness providers.

  • Has Been Shown To Relieve Stress and Anxiety

    • In Ayurveda medicine, ashwagandha is considered an adaptogen. It is a natural substance that can help your body respond to stress. Ashwagandha may be a natural remedy for stress and has been shown to have fewer side effects than medications used to treat anxiety. It may reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol and regulate brain chemicals that affect mood.

  • Helps Improves Sleep

    • Taking ashwagandha may help people sleep better. In one study, 29 people with insomnia who took ashwagandha fell asleep faster, had better sleep quality, and spent more time asleep while in bed.

  • Improve Cognitive Function

    • Ashwagandha may improve certain cognitive functions. One study showed that participants with mild cognitive decline who took 600 milligrams of ashwagandha daily had improved memory compared to the placebo group. Another study found that participants who took 400 milligrams daily for 30 days showed better memory and attention than those who took a placebo.

  • Might Reduce Blood Sugar Levels

    • Ashwagandha may play a role in managing diabetes. Ingesting the herb has been shown to decrease blood sugar, glycosylated hemoglobin (your average blood sugar levels for the previous 2-3 months), insulin, lipids, and oxidative stress markers.

AUGUST SPOTLIGHT ATHLETE

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING CROSSFIT?

I started CrossFit at Fury in March 2011, so over 14 years!

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST WIN SINCE COMING TO FURY?

I have had so many wins since coming to Fury. I have met amazing people, learned almost every skill and competed in many qualifiers and events all around the world. My current biggest win is qualifying for the Age Group CrossFit Games this year.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT FURY?

The things I love most about Fury is what almost everyone says... the community. All of the people I have met and work out with on a daily basis. I also love the coaching. I love that the coaches push me and everyone but allow for scaling or movement changes to meet us where we are in our journey.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE AND LEAST FAVORITE MOVEMENTS WHEN IT COMES TO CROSSFIT?

My favorite moves in CrossFit are handstand walks, handstand push-ups and muscle ups... now that I can do them. I have a short list of least favorite movements - lunges, thrusters, weighted box step-ups and running.

ANY ADVICE TO SOMEONE LOOKING TO START IMPROVING THEIR HEALTH AND FITNESS?

Advice I give people looking to start their health and fitness journey is just to start. Don't wait for some specific day or period of the year. Just get going! So much time passes us by and you can look back at the last year and it is over. If you would have started then all of that work would be behind you. Don't put it off and be in the same position a year from now. Changes take time, eating is 80% of health, and exercise is the catalyst. Being fit requires getting the heart rate up. CrossFit is the best and easiest way to get fit. You show up every dayand do the best you can for that day. I did not do too much extra or special to get where I am today, I just kept showing up and giving 100% of what I had that day - repeated over years the results will come.
