CROSSFIT FOR HEALTH SUMMIT

The first weekend of February, the inaugural CrossFit for HealthSummit was held Austin, Texas. As health care professions who have long appreciated the benefits of the CrossFit methodology, co-owners Tracy Burns and Jordan Leonard made the trek to Austin, Texas. Not only were they there for the notable nightlife, they participated in a workout led by CrossFit Competition Director Adrian Bozman and a predawn ruck around Austin led by Games Sponsor GORUCK.

Now everyone is able to hear from the industry leaders that gathered in Austin to discuss the latest research on longevity, mental health, and chronic disease and how the CrossFit community is uniquely positioned to change future key elements of healthcare delivery across the world.

SUPPLEMENT SPOTLIGHT

From the regulation of muscle contractions and blood pressure to energy production, blood sugar balance and even weight management and mood, magnesium’s role in the body is an important one. It is the fourth-most abundant mineral in the body, and involved in more than 300 enzymatic reactions.

Magnesium also plays a crucial role in supporting the following aspects of our health:

  • Heart health. Regulates nerve and muscle function throughout the body, including the heart muscle. Magnesium helps the heart maintain a healthy rhythm and is involved in the regulation of blood pressure and cholesterol production.

  • Bone health. Crucial for normal bone structure, magnesium plays a critical role in both bone formation and the maintenance of bone density as we age.

  • Metabolic health. Facilitates the digestion of fatty acids and proteins and helps to regulate blood glucose levels.

  • Sleep. Plays a key role in supporting deep, restorative sleep by regulating certain neurotransmitters that calm the nervous system and allow the brain to transition to a restful state.

  • Stress management. Helps to reduce the levels of the stress hormone cortisol in the body.

  • Mental health. Helps to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety after supplementation.

  • Metabolism and performance. Involved in energy production, oxygen uptake and electrolyte balance so it plays a key role in energy metabolism.

Magnesium is available in high-quantity in natural & unprocessed foods such as dark green, leafy vegetables like Swiss chard, spinach, etc. Nuts and seeds like pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds are also a great source of magnesium. Other natural sources include seaweed, whole & unrefined grains, beans, and lentils.

Common forms of magnesium that you’re likely to see on a supplement label include magnesium citrate, oxide, glycinate and malate. Recommended daily supplementation doses range from. 300-400mg. AN EXERCISE IN HONOR:

MURPH HERO WOD

Murph is a CrossFit Hero workout that stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of U.S. Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy, who died heroically in the line of duty in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005.

Murph was introduced as a CrossFit Hero workout on Aug. 18, 2005, and has become a long-standing tradition observed by CrossFit and a broader global community of athletes. Thousands of CrossFit gyms program Murph each year on Memorial Day as a way to honor Lt. Murphy and all others who have served.

LT. Murphy (SEAL) was the officer-in-charge of a four-man SEAL element in support of Operation Red Wings, tasked with finding a key militia commander in Afghanistan. Shortly after inserting into the objective area, the SEALs were spotted by three goat herders who were initially detained and then released. It is believed the goat herders immediately reported the SEALs’ presence to Taliban fighters.

A fierce gun battle ensued on the steep face of the mountain between the SEALs and a much larger enemy force. Despite the intensity of the firefight and suffering grave gunshot wounds himself, Murphy is credited with risking his own life to save the lives of his teammates.

Moving away from the protective mountain rocks, he knowingly exposed himself to increased enemy gunfire. This deliberate and heroic act deprived him of cover and made him a target for the enemy. While continuing to be fired upon, Murphy made contact with the SOF Quick Reaction Force at Bagram Air Base and requested assistance. At one point, he was shot in the back causing him to drop the transmitter. Murphy picked it back up, completed the call and continued firing at the enemy who was closing in. Severely wounded, LT. Murphy returned to his cover position with his men and continued the battle.

LT. Murphy fought on, allowing one member of his team (Marcus Luttrell) to escape, before he was killed. For his selfless actions, LT. Michael Murphy was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor on October 27, 2007. We honor his sacrifice and memory through The Murph Challenge.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE MURPH CHALLENGE

MAY SPOTLIGHT ATHLETE

Matthew Obst

1. How did you first discover CrossFit, and what motivated you to give it a try?

I really discovered CrossFit by watching the Games during Fraser’s reign and it became an annual tradition for me. By watching the Games and learning to love the healthy lifestyle, I knew I wanted to eventually get into the CrossFit world. When I decided I wanted to stop playing baseball at the collegiate level, an opportunity arose for CrossFit to fill the hole baseball left.

2. Can you share a memorable moment or achievement in your CrossFit journey that you're particularly proud of?

I honestly think there have been countless moments and achievements that I have been blessed to experience, but I will say a big one was competing in Murph for the first-time last year. I knew Murph was a workout I really wanted to try, for the challenge and it being a hero workout. It wasn’t a great performance on my part, but just being able to participate with the Fury community made it memorable. I was proud because that moment made me feel like I was truly a Cross Fitter.

3. How has CrossFit impacted your overall fitness and well-being compared to other workout routines you may have tried in the past?

CrossFit has made a significant impact on me and my fitness. I can honestly say that I am in the best shape I have ever been, both physically and mentally. I can recall multiple times discussing with my coaches about how the bar feels lighter than I expected, or how I thrived in a workout that I thought I was going to struggle to get through. Confidence has been a huge thing during my CrossFit journey. I have always struggled with my self-confidence but coming to class every day and being surrounded by supportive people allowed me to gain that confidence. Now, I feel like my confidence level in myself, and my ability is at an all-time high.

4. What do you enjoy most about the CrossFit community and the atmosphere at Fury?

The CrossFit community is a major reason I wanted to pursue the sport. I wanted to be a part of something where it competitive, yet at the same time, full of support and love. I don’t think there is anything like CrossFit because people are there to see others succeed, and not wish for their downfalls. I can say that CrossFit Fury has exceeded my expectations!

5. Can you talk about any specific challenges you've faced in your CrossFit journey and how you overcame them?

I think the biggest challenge I faced during my CrossFit journey was at the beginning. I struggled with the idea of joining a class and being new to everything. I was intimidated by the idea of working out with experienced Cross Fitters and being left in the dust. The first couple of times I tried to join a class, I couldn’t leave my truck. I was deathly afraid and anxious. I finally decided that I needed to face this uncomfortable situation and get it over with. That was the best decision I have ever made, and I want to thank those people who welcomed me in. They allowed me to be able to feel comfortable and truly feel the support of the CrossFit community.

6. How do you balance your CrossFit training with other aspects of your life, such as work, family, and social commitments?

As a full-time student, who now is working two part-time jobs, free time can be difficult. Though, I have been fortunate for my schedule to allow me to attend a certain class time routinely. I also view CrossFit as a priority in my life. It also helps that the classes usually don’t go over schedule.

7. How has being part of the Fury community influenced your motivation and commitment to your fitness goals?

I can’t thank the Fury community enough for the support and extra motivation. I don’t think I would be in the position I am right now if it weren’t for them. Being part of the Fury community has only provided more motivation for me to reach the goals I have set for myself. Seeing how I have progressed and getting helpful feedback has made me hungrier to reach those goals. Feeling support and love has caused me to work harder and stay committed to the goals in front of me. I feel like some have high expectations for me, and that motivates me to no end.

8. What advice would you give to someone who is considering trying CrossFit for the first time?

If you want to be a part of something that’s full of people who truly want you to succeed, CrossFit is the thing for you. Everyone is pulling for you, no matter where you are on your journey. You might be uncomfortable at the start, but you won’t regret staying on the path.
