FURY FOCUS NEWSLETTER

THE 2024 CROSSFIT OPEN

The CrossFit Open is a three-week international competition where anyone — regardless of fitness level or ability — can compete in the biggest fitness competition in history.

Whether you consider yourself a CrossFit newbie, competitor, enthusiast, fan, or community supporter, the CrossFit Open is for you

That’s because the Open takes on a special and unique meaning for each person who signs up. For some, the Open brings to life the why behind our daily commitment to CrossFit. Many of us came to CrossFit because we wanted more for our health and fitness, and the Open provides us with a way to stay accountable to this effort. For others, it’s a way to connect and celebrate with other CrossFit athletes within their affiliate and in other cities around the world.

While the workouts get a good effort out of everyone, for many, the motivation to participate comes from the camaraderie and support that wafts through affiliates and the worldwide community during this time of year. The shared suffering reminds us we are part of something much bigger than our individual efforts: We are part of a community that believes in the truth that CrossFit makes us — and the world — better.

The 2024 Open will take place from Feb. 29-March 18.

SUPPLEMENT SPOTLIGHT

Creatine is a natural supplement used by many to maximize athletic performance, improve brain function and increase muscle growth. It is not only safe but also one of the world’s most popular and effective supplements.

1. Allow muscle cells to produce more energy.

Creatine supplements increase your muscles’ phosphocreatine stores, which facilitates the formation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the key molecule your cells use for energy. During exercise, ATP is broken down to produce energy. The rate of ATP production limits your ability to perform at maximum intensity, as you use ATP faster than you reproduce it. Creatine supplements increase your phosphocreatine stores, allowing you to produce more ATP energy to fuel your muscles during high-intensity exercise. Creatine’s direct role in ATP production means it can drastically improve high-intensity exercise performance. Unlike supplements that have been shown to primarily impact advanced athletes, creatine has been shown to provide benefits regardless of a person’s fitness level. One review found that it improves high-intensity exercise performance by up to 15%.

2. Increases muscle growth.

According to a position statement from The International Society of Sports Nutrition, creatine is the world’s most effective supplement for adding muscle mass.

Taking it for as few as 5–7 days has been shown to significantly increase lean body weight and muscle size. This initial rise is caused by increases in the water content of your muscles. Over the long term, it also aids in muscle fiber growth by signaling key biological pathways. In a four-week study, scientists found a 17 percent improvement in cycling sprints, an 18-lb increase in bench press 1-rep max and a 20 percent greater workload at a lower weight when supplied with creatine. Of the many popular sports supplements on the market, creatine consistently ranks among the best athletic performance supplements available. Its advantages include being relatively inexpensive and having been verified safe when compared with many other sports supplements.

3. May help lower blood sugar levels.

Research suggests that creatine supplements may lower blood sugar levels by increasing the function of glucose transporter type 4 (GLUT-4), a molecule that brings blood sugar into your muscles. A 12-week study examined how creatine affects blood sugar levels after a high carb meal. People who combined creatine and exercise exhibited better blood sugar control than those who only exercised. Short-term blood sugar response to a meal is an important marker of diabetes risk. The faster your body clears sugar from the blood, the better.

4. Elevates testosterone levels.

With decreasing testosterone levels, many men experience a decrease in energy, endurance, strength, mental sharpness, and sex drive. One solution is testosterone replacement therapy, but creatine supplementation may also help. Following a 10-week resistance training program, participants who took a daily creatine supplement significantly increased their resting testosterone levels, according to one study.

5. Improves brain function.

A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis of placebo-controlled clinical trials indicated that creatine supplementation moderately improved memory function in healthy adults. There is also evidence that supplementation may be beneficial for people experiencing acute/chronic stress. Because anxiety, PTSD, and depression symptoms are associated with metabolic dysfunction and impaired energy levels in the brain, creatine supplementation can be beneficial. Initial human creatine interventional trials indicate small to moderate symptom improvements for individuals with these mental health conditions.

The most effective form of creatine is creatine monohydrate. Most experts recommend 5g of creatine per 100lbs of body weight taken daily, regardless of your exercise regime. When purchased through the Thorne Fury store, a 90 day supply costs $28. Paleo/Whole 30 Nutrition Challenge

Sometimes we wish we got more out of our training and it’s important to recognize the impact that nutrition has on our progress in life and at the gym. Good nutrition habits, however, become stronger the more we work at them and they take time. Shout out to the 25 athletes that committed themselves to optimizing their nutrition for 30 days with the education and support of Tracy Burns, Randy Blazic, Cam and Michelle Moore, and Meredith Wall.

Look for another chance to participate in a nutritional challenge in July/August.

SPOTLIGHT ATHLETE

MELISSA LAMBERT

“It doesn’t take a professional athlete to understand that all human beings will struggle at some point regardless of wealth and fame. Everyone has a story to tell and is often fighting an internal battle of negative thoughts that we know nothing about. Being part of a positive and supportive community is a protective factor to combat mental health challenges.”

Melissa moved to Arizona in 2019 and became a member of Fury. “I can’t imagine starting my day any other way. Working out is an essential part of how I take care of my own physical and mental well-being”.

Melissa is starting her fifth season with the Royals as the Director of Behavioral Science and Major League Mental Performance. In her role, she provides support to the major league players and coaches with mental performance, mitigates risk for any mental health issues and oversees mental performance programming for the department. She is a licensed professional counselor in the states of Arizona, Connecticut and Missouri as well as a trainer for Mental Health First Aid.

1. How did you first discover CrossFit, and what motivated you to give it a try? One of my friend’s in Connecticut decided to open a CrossFit gym in New London and reached out saying I would love the competitive nature of CF. I played soccer at the collegiate level and loved feeling like I always had something to work on. I was also motivated by being able to workout with my friends.

2. Can you share a memorable moment or achievement in your CrossFit journey that you're particularly proud of? I had a year where I participated in multiple team competitions with one being at Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut. I had pushed myself harder then I ever had in order because I didn’t want to let me team down. This included completing multiple muscle-ups after needing to learn in a month.

3. How has CrossFit impacted your overall fitness and well-being compared to other workout routines you may have tried in the past? CrossFit has met my needs on the mental side. I love the feeling like I gave it everything I had to get through a workout. It’s the perfect combination of weight lifting, skill-based and cardio.

4. What do you enjoy most about the CrossFit community and the atmosphere at Fury? Since I’m on the road a lot for work I drop-in to crossfit gyms all over the country and everyone is always so welcoming. I love the 5am energy at Fury. Everyone is there to work hard and start their day on the right foot. I always feel like I’m getting pushed and supported at the time.

5. Can you talk about any specific challenges you've faced in your CrossFit journey and how you overcame them? There was a point when I was overdoing it with my workouts and I felt burnout. I took a break from CrossFit to focus more on running and structured lifts. I found myself quickly missing the camaraderie and social connections built through the crossfit community.

6. How do you balance your CrossFit training with other aspects of your life, such as work, family, and social commitments? The reason I go to the earliest class is because it gives me the best chance for consistency with a hectic schedule. I love starting my day with great people and a great workout.

7. How has being part of the Fury community influenced your motivation and commitment to your fitness goals? The reason I go to the earliest class is because it gives me the best chance for consistency with a hectic schedule. I love starting my day with great people and a great workout.

8. What advice would you give to someone who is considering trying CrossFit for the first time? I think CrossFit tends to present as intimidating to people but it’s all about finding the right programming, coaches and atmosphere that people feel will meet their needs. Anytime I have moved to do a different area I have tried several CrossFit gyms to determine what feels like the best fit. People are welcoming and come with all different fitness levels. Every person I have talked to that has done crossfit for any long of time will tell you it has made them feel more confident about themselves.
