In today's issue, I share some key takeaways from a recent interview between Nathan Latka, the host of Daily Interviews with SaaS Founders, and Ashwin Madhavan, the CEO and Founder of VidBoard. They discussed how he hit $20k in MRR in 2 months by creating videos from static images and text.

Ashwin Madhavan is a lawyer by profession and a serial entrepreneur in practice. Technology has always fascinated him outside the practice of law, and his newest startup, vidBoard, has a deep tech AI video platform.

About vidBoard

VidBoard converts text to videos featuring humans in minutes. This platform can transform any front-facing human photograph into a talking human without the need to go into any studio with just text as an input. It can also translate any text into 125+ languages.

The idea came in December 2020. It took them about 8-10 months to train their models, and their MVP was ready in August 2021. They launched it on Product Hunt last June 2022 and got 426 upvotes that drove 1,500 signups. As they went into the week, they saw traction coming from LinkedIn and other social media websites.

P.S. At the moment, they're on an invite-only basis. They charge between $50-75 per month to B2C clients and about $2K to their B2B clients.

Challenges

When they entered the market, the MVP wanted people to protest.

But Ashwin made the most of these critics and took another 3-4 months to develop a better video creation tool wherein people could drag-drop assets onto the canvas, create colorful templates along with the avatar, add text, and make animation around the text.

Advice to Other Founders

Collaborate with other companies.

Collaborating with other companies can help build relationships and share resources. They wanted to partner with companies that could easily clone a voice and talk into different languages.

Believe in your product.

You have to take risks. Ashwin wasn't nervous and believed his product was going to do well. To their surprise, things went up, and the investor and incubator communities worldwide, including Canada and US, genuinely appreciated the product, some of which contacted them.

Bonus

  1. Ashwin's favorite business book is "The Art of the Start" by Guy Kawasaki.
  2. He's studying many CEOs, but the biggest one is Steve Jobs.
  3. He's single with a 4-legged son (he’s still crawling), Bo, named after Barack Obama.
  4. Looking back in his 20s, he can't help but wish he had been a techie. If he had been, he feels he could have done so much more.

TL;DR

VidBoard was launched a couple of months ago, now doing $20k in monthly revenue, costs ten invite-only customers, and over 1500 on their waitlist. They had a successful launch on Product Hunt with 426 upvotes. It's an AI-powered platform that lets you put up a picture, make your mouth move, and put up any text you want. It helps translate the same audio into different languages or things of that nature when creating courses or training internally for your team.
