Member tips for playing a tough golf course!

Our golf course is known—and has long been known—as one of the toughest in the area. We’re extremely fortunate to have a superintendent who keeps our turf healthy, providing the playing conditions you all deserve!

1. Club Down Off the Tee

  • Why: Firm fairways mean more rollout.

  • Tip: You don’t always need driver. A 3-wood or long iron may get you the same or better position with less risk.

2. Land It Short of the Green

  • Why: Balls bounce and roll more than usual.

  • Tip: Aim to land your approach shots 5–15 yards short (or even more depending on firmness) and let it release toward the pin.

3. Focus on Trajectory Control

  • Why: High shots can get caught in the wind or spin unpredictably.

  • Tip: Hit lower, flighted shots—think knockdowns and punch shots—to maintain control and distance predictability.

4. Use the Slopes

  • Why: Firm greens won’t hold shots unless you use contours.

  • Tip: Read the course like a links—use slopes, banks, and feeder areas to work the ball to your target.

5. Prioritize Position Over Distance

  • Why: Firm conditions magnify small misses.

  • Tip: Stay on the right side of hazards, fairway bunkers, and slopes even if it means giving up distance.

6. Master Your Short Game

  • Why: You’ll miss more greens.

  • Tip: Be creative with bump-and-runs, putts from off the green, and low-spinning chips. Don’t always grab the lob wedge.

7. Stay Below the Hole

  • Why: Downhill putts on fast greens are deadly.

  • Tip: Even if it means a longer uphill putt, favor the low side and give yourself a better chance to control pace.

8. Be Mentally Prepared for Bounces

  • Why: Firm conditions mean quirky bounces.

  • Tip: Accept it. Good shots might get bad breaks. Stay calm, commit to your plan, and play smart.

Bonus: Dial in Your Yardages on the Range

  • Why: Distance control is crucial.

  • Tip: Focus on carry yardages, especially with irons and wedges—know how far your ball carries, not rolls.
